Description
The New START is a treaty between the United States and the Russian Federation to replace the Treaty Between the United States of America and the Russian Federation on Strategic Offensive Reductions of May 24, 2002. This treaty continues to work toward the ultimate goal of a world without nuclear weapons and sees both the U.S. and Russia agreeing to reduce and limit strategic offensive arms that are explicitly defined in the treaty.
The treaty looks to create an open relationship based on trust and accountability between the U.S. and Russia in order to work toward the common goal of nuclear reduction:
“…Working therefore to forge a new strategic relationship based on mutual trust, openness, predictability, and cooperation,
Desiring to bring their respective nuclear postures into alignment with this new relationship, and endeavoring to reduce further the role and importance of nuclear weapons,”
